I would like to share with you some of the top free softwares that I have been using all these years to do my work and keep me safe and most of them are even better than the bloated paid software that you might be currently using. Also by using these software you will make your PC run faster and will also save you money in the long term. |
# Anti Virus: Stop paying yearly subscriptions fee for anti virus protection, I have been using avast Home edition for the last 4 years and I can say it works, I have stopped worrying about virus, Trojans and worms etc….. as avast takes care of them. You don’t have to pay a yearly fee to use the same and at the same time avast is very light on resources so it wont bog down your computer also avast updates itself automatically and the anti virus updates are pretty frequent so you are well protected.
if you have Norton / Symantec or McAfee products I suggest you uninstall them and start using Avast (it works fine with both Windows XP and Vista) or AVG anti virus, not only it will protect your system but your computer will also a lot faster.
# PDF Viewer: You must be using Adobe acrobat to view PDF files, but don’t you think its a huge software that make your computer feel slow when you try to view a simple PDF file, look no further you can use Foxit Reader to view PDF files, its just around 2MB in size and loads around 4-10 times faster than Adobe Acrobat reader, and again it wont ask you to update itself every 20 days!
# Codec Pack: Wouldn’t it be nice if Windows Media Player would play almost every file you throw at it, MPEG4, DIVX, FFMPEG, MP4 etc so that you would not have to install separate applications or download seperate codec files to play each video file! Welcome to k-lite codec pack after installing this your Windows Media Player would be able to play 95% of the video or audio format you can throw at it.
#Internet Monitor: I am sure you would love to monitor how fast your internet connection is or would like to keep a track on the amount of data you have downloaded,Netmeter is an excellent free software that monitors your internet connection speed in real time showing you a graph and also has extensive reporting showing how much you downloaded per day / month. |
#Firewalls: If you are using Vista this section doesn’t apply to you, but if you are using Windows XP and relying on windows firewall to protect you, you need to look at these, Comodo Pro Firewall or Zone Alarm Basic firewall. (Make sure you un-installed any other firewall that you might have like, because having two firewalls will create problems). |
# Anti Spyware: In this Internet age, just having an anti virus and a Firewall wont protect you. You also need a good ant-spyware apart from Windows Defender, you should also installLavasoft Ad-aware or Spybot Search & destroy. (It’s safe to have more than one anti spyware, I personally use Windows defender with Ad-aware).
# Zipping and Compressing: Windows has built in support for Zip file and it works, but what if you encounter the .arj .gz or .tar file, 7-Zip is an excellent freeware software that will handle most of the compressed files, and is highly recommended for your file compressing needs.
